EXAM FORMAT

Understanding the Chelmsford County High School 11+ exam

Chelmsford County High School for Girls (CCHS) uses the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) format for its 11+ entrance exam. CCHS is the only grammar school in Essex that does not use the CSSE consortium test, having independently adopted the FSCE format.

The FSCE test assesses how well children apply the knowledge they have already covered in school up to the end of Year 5, rather than testing verbal or non-verbal reasoning separately. The exam typically includes:

  • A multiple-choice paper covering English and maths skills

  • A free-response paper with short written answers

  • A creative writing task assessed for clarity, structure and original thinking

  • Content drawn from the Key Stage 2 curriculum to the end of Year 5

  • Age-standardised scoring, so children are not disadvantaged by birth date

Because the FSCE format focuses on applied knowledge rather than pure reasoning technique, preparation for Chelmsford rewards children who build secure KS2 foundations, strong reading habits, and confidence writing under time pressure.

Exam formats can change. Always confirm the current format and dates directly with Chelmsford County High School before finalising your preparation plan.

CCHS does not test verbal or non-verbal reasoning, so our Verbal Reasoning titles are not needed specifically for Chelmsford. They remain useful general reasoning practice if your child is also sitting 11+ exams at other schools where those skills are assessed, such as the CSSE or GL Assessment schools.

PREPARATION APPROACH

Calm, structured preparation for a highly competitive grammar school

Chelmsford County High School offers 180 Year 7 places and is popular with families across the Chelmsford area, which makes preparation both important and easy to overdo. The FSCE format rewards children who think clearly across a broad KS2 curriculum, not those who have drilled narrow test technique in isolation.

An effective Chelmsford preparation plan typically includes:

  • Wide reading across fiction and non-fiction for vocabulary and comprehension depth

  • Secure KS2 maths, with multi-step word problems and mental arithmetic accuracy

  • Regular creative writing practice to build confidence writing under time pressure

  • Familiarity with multiple-choice answer sheets and short-answer response formats

  • Full timed papers introduced in the final stage, once the underlying skills are secure

Gulliford Tutors' books are written to support exactly this kind of steady, focused preparation. Each title has a clear purpose so parents and tutors can see what the child is working on at every stage, and why.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Chelmsford County High School for Girls at a glance

Chelmsford County High School for Girls is a selective grammar school for girls aged 11 to 18, located in Chelmsford, Essex. Established in 1907, the school has approximately 1,186 pupils on roll and offers 180 Year 7 places each year.

CCHS is the only grammar school in Essex that does not use the CSSE consortium test. It independently adopted the FSCE format and manages its own admissions process. The school's priority area is a 12.5-mile radius from the school, measured in a straight line. Applicants from outside this area are eligible to sit the test but are considered after those within the priority area who meet the required standard.

For the 2027 entry cycle, registration opened 13 April 2026 and closes 3 June 2026. The entrance test takes place on Thursday 3 September 2026. Scores are age-standardised with no fixed pass mark; admission is based on ranked performance.

The school explicitly states that the FSCE test does not require specialist tutoring and that no specific preparation is necessary. Parents should confirm all dates and admissions arrangements directly with the school.
