SKIPTON GIRLS' SCHOOL PREPARATION

Skipton Girls' High School 11+ practice papers and preparation books

FSCE-aligned revision books for the Skipton Girls' High School 11+ entrance exam. Targeted English and Maths practice covering the two-paper Adventure and Beacon format tested at entry.

EXAM FORMAT

Understanding the Skipton Girls' High School FSCE 11+ exam

Skipton Girls' High School uses the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) entrance test for Year 7 admission. The school manages its own admissions process independently and is not part of a consortium with other grammar schools.

The Skipton Girls' High School 11+ is one of the most straightforward FSCE formats, consisting of two papers sat on the same day:

  • Adventure Paper: English and Maths questions in a multiple-choice format. Answers are recorded on a separate answer sheet and marked electronically.

  • Beacon Paper: English and Maths questions requiring short written answers. Responses are written in constrained fields, typically a single letter or digit per box on the answer sheet.

There is no creative writing paper or Discovery paper in the Skipton Girls' High School exam. The entire assessment focuses on English and Maths skills drawn from the Key Stage 2 curriculum up to the end of Year 5.

All scores are age-standardised so that children born later in the academic year are not disadvantaged. There is no fixed pass mark. Children are ranked by their results, and places are offered according to the school's admissions criteria, with priority given to applicants within the Craven area of North Yorkshire.

The FSCE format does not test verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning as standalone subjects.

Preparation should focus on core English comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and KS2 maths.

Exam formats can change. Always confirm the current format and dates directly with Skipton Girls' High School before finalising your preparation plan.

PREPARATION APPROACH

Structured preparation for the Skipton Girls' High School 11+ entrance exam

Skipton Girls' High School is consistently popular with families across the Craven area and beyond, with an average of five applications for every available place. The FSCE format is designed to assess how well children can apply what they have learned through their primary school curriculum, rather than rewarding intensive test-specific coaching.

A well-structured preparation plan for the Skipton Girls' High School 11+ typically includes:

  • Consistent reading across fiction and non-fiction to build vocabulary, comprehension and the ability to interpret unfamiliar texts

  • Secure KS2 maths foundations, with particular attention to multi-step problems, fractions, decimals, percentages and mental arithmetic

  • Regular practice with multiple-choice answer sheets and short written answer formats, so the mechanics of the exam feel familiar and manageable

  • Focused vocabulary work, including synonyms, antonyms and word meanings in context

  • Timed practice papers introduced in the later stages of preparation, once underlying English and Maths skills are established

Gulliford Tutors books are structured to support this kind of purposeful, progressive preparation. Each title focuses on a specific skill area and provides the repeated, focused practice needed to build genuine confidence in the English and Maths skills tested at Skipton Girls' High School.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Skipton Girls' High School at a glance

Skipton Girls' High School is a selective grammar school for girls aged 11 to 18, located in the North Yorkshire market town of Skipton. Part of the Northern Star Academies Trust, the school has approximately 880 students and was rated Good by Ofsted, with Outstanding for behaviour and attitudes.

The school offers approximately 116 Year 7 places each year (parents should confirm the current PAN from the school's admissions policy). The Craven area of North Yorkshire is the school's priority area, meaning girls who live locally and meet the required standard are prioritised for places. Applications from families outside this area are welcome, though distance from the school is taken into account if more candidates qualify than there are places available.

Skipton Girls' High School is located in the same town as Ermysted's Grammar School, which is a boys' grammar school also moving to the FSCE format. Families in the Skipton area preparing for grammar school entry will find the same core English and Maths skills are relevant to both schools.

For the 2027 entry cycle, registration is expected to open on 1 May 2026, with the entrance test taking place on a Saturday in September 2026. Parents should confirm all dates directly with the school.
