EXAM FORMAT
Understanding the Reading School FSCE 11+ exam
Reading School moved to the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) format for Year 7 entry from September 2025. Unlike the GL Assessment papers used by many grammar schools, the FSCE exam focuses on how children apply what they have learned up to the end of Year 5, rather than on verbal or non-verbal reasoning.
The test is structured as four separate papers, taken in one sitting with short breaks in between:
-
Adventure Paper: multiple-choice questions drawn from a range of KS2 subjects, including English, maths, science, geography and history
-
Beacon Paper: short written response questions across a similar subject range
-
Compass Paper: a second multiple-choice paper with a different subject focus
-
Discovery Paper: a creative writing task assessing original thinking, imagination and problem-solving
Because the FSCE format does not test verbal or non-verbal reasoning, preparation for Reading School should focus on core English, maths, curriculum breadth, and disciplined written response under timed conditions.
Exam formats can change. Always confirm the current format and dates directly with Reading School before finalising your preparation plan.
RECOMMENDED BOOKS
Which Gulliford Tutors books suit Reading School preparation
Our range is organised by preparation focus rather than by school, so the titles below can be combined into a structured plan for Reading School as part of a wider KS2 reading and writing routine.
FSCE Practice Papers
Full-length papers that replicate the FSCE multiple-choice and written-response formats. Used once core skills are in place, to build exam stamina and familiarity with answer sheets.
Maths and Skills
Exam-focused maths practice covering number, method choice, accuracy and speed. Well suited to the maths content that appears across the Adventure, Beacon and Compass papers.
Verbal Reasoning
Browse the full Gulliford Tutors range, including English comprehension, creative writing and broader skills practice to support the Discovery paper.
Reading School does not test verbal or non-verbal reasoning, so our Verbal Reasoning titles are not required for this exam. They remain useful general reasoning practice if children are also sitting 11+ exams at other schools that do test these skills.
PREPARATION APPROACH
Calm, structured preparation for a demanding four-paper exam
The Reading School entrance exam is competitive, with around 150 places available each year and significant oversubscription. The FSCE format rewards children who can think clearly under time pressure across a broad KS2 curriculum, rather than those who have memorised narrow test technique.
An effective preparation plan typically includes:
-
Consistent reading across fiction and non-fiction to build vocabulary and comprehension
-
Secure KS2 maths with focus on multi-step word problems and mental arithmetic accuracy
-
Creative writing practice across different styles for the Discovery paper
-
Familiarity with multiple-choice answer sheets and short-answer response formats
-
Full timed papers introduced in the final preparation stage, not at the start
Gulliford Tutors' books are structured to support exactly this kind of steady, focused preparation. Each title is written with clarity and purpose so parents and tutors can see at every stage what the child is working on and why.
